night, when the two allegedly pulled up and stole 150 small evergreen trees from the Yule Log Christmas Tree Farm on Rt. 637. Both men are charged with grand larceny in that incident.
On Nov. 28, Capt. Streapy said, the two again returned to the tree farm, which is owned by Ralph _ Woodruff, and cut down and stole 36 large evergreen trees. Another tree, an arborvitae, was also stolen that night from Franklin A. Hume, who also lives on Rt. 637. Smoot and Ramey are charged with grand larceny in the evergreen tree theft and petty larceny in the theft of Mr. Hume’s tree.
The two men are also charged with breaking and entering and grand larceny in the burglary of Foster’s Packing House on Nov. 30. Taken in that incident were an Echo chain saw, several jars of fruit preserves and apple butter and 10 cases of soda. Everything but the soda has been recovered, Capt. Streapy said.
On Dec. 2, the two allegedly “maliciously killed and butchered” a 350pound head of cattle belonging to the Jordan River Farm, also on Rt. 637. According to Capt. Streapy, the two men butchered the animal in the field, within sight of the road, taking the four quarters of beef and leaving the remainder of the carcass in the field. Both men are charged with grand larceny in that incident.
Finally, last Thursday, according to Capt. Streapy the two returned to the Yule Log tree farm a third time, on this occasion allegedly pulling up and stealing another 11 small trees. Both Smoot and Ramey are charged with petty larceny in that incident.
Capt. Streapy said that all the items stolen in the thefts have been recovered, with the exception of the soda stolen in the Foster’s Packing House burglary. He said that the investigation last Thursday evening included Sheriff Woodward, Lt. Jeff
