Of course, it was a day of persecution for the good Bishop and many of his people. Fact is, not long after that, he was burned at the stake. Yet, in his opinion and experience, it was a great day in which to live. The greatness of life is determined not by ease but by how creative we are in times of hardship. We decide what we see in life and about life; that's what makes life real and exciting—our faith in what is and our hope in what can be. We need to grasp the faith and vision of the young Frenchman standing amidst the ruins of his little town caused by the Nazis. “How can you be so optimistic in the middle of so much gloom?" someone asked him. “The world is being wrecked but I am going to have the privilege of helping build it back."
