nual tonnage of refuse appreciably. This will decrease the space needed for landfills and the amount of air pollution due to incineration. But hey, we don’t care about that, do we? I guess if you don’t care about property values or breathe air you don’t have anything to worry about.
Recycling is an idea which is capable, clean and cost beneficial if conducted in the correct manner. Ms. Sweets’ example of Woodbury, N. J., is an excellent example of how NOT to run a recycling operation. But basing an opinion on the negative aspects of one (substandard) recycling operation is not my idea of an unbiased view.
In reference to Ms. Sweets’ line about not caring what they do with the garbage, I suggest that she take a good, hard look at how Woodbury got the way it is. Recycling did not cause the problems in New Jersey, uncaring people did. We don’t need that attitude in Rappahannock County, if it is to stay as it has over the years. Recycling is not a cureall, but neither is giving up due to bureaucratic failure and plain laziness.
