He struggles to find the words that will explain what the program means to a mentally disabled person. “If you need help, who do you turn to? You turn to Laurel House. If you’ve been released from the hospital and you want to get back into society, you come to Laurel House. It’s the only chance for people like myself who are trying to get back up the ladder, to walk those steps. You do the best you can to make something of yourself.
“Have you ever seen a chart for a business? The graphs that show sales going up and down? That’s the way it is with mental illness. I go up and down, just like a business.”
But with the assistance and support he gets from Laurel House, Robert hopes that someday he’ll be up for good, rehabilitated, no longer mentally disabled. “Then I’ll be able to stick my chest out and say, ‘Yes, I did it!’.”
