an administrative position to supervise the gifted and talented programs. Superintendent David Gangel now has that job. Under his predecessor, Robert Estabrook, the special services coordinator was responsible for the gifted and talented programs but the post was abolished by the School Board last year after the Board of Supervisors cut the administrative category of the 1987-88 school budget by the amount of that administrator’s salary. “Every other aspect of special education has one or more full-time people assigned,” said Mrs. Kilpatrick. “I think a lot with the gifted and talented programs are falling through the cracks.”
The calendar given final approval at last Tuesday’s meeting calls for Dr. Gangel to present the proposed school budget at a work session on March 1. Time for public response will be given at the regular meeting March 8 and then the School Board will hold work sessions on March 15 and, if needed, on March 22 and March 29. The budget is due to be forwarded to the supervisors by April 1.
Leave policy
An amendment to the leave policy prompted by a request that students be excused during the school day for monthly Bible classes was approved as recommended by the superintendent. The policy for prearranged absences now specifies that upon authorization by the principal, students may be released from school at a parent’s or guardian’s written request to “visit the dentist or physician, accompany parents on vacation, attend religious activities, or for any other reasonable purpose ... so long as the period of release does not interrupt the educational process of the school or the pupil.”
