The Rappahannock County Education Association took a new tack this year, separating its budget request into instructional, building, and Safety components. The first two, presented at last Tuesday’s School Board meeting, give top priority to:
,• Elementary school instruction - an art teacher; an art classroom; another physical education teacher; an alternative education program for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders who are at ripk socially or academically, and a special allocation for supplies which the speech teacher needs toset up a new speech program.
High school instruction - more electives, including another language and additional science options; the start of planning to meet the expanded and soon-to-be implemented accreditation, requirements for remedial reading and fine arts electives; time before the end of the school year for shop and science teachers to conduct inventory, repair broken equipment, and do preventive maintenance, and money budgeted on a rotating basis for special requests that come from various departments and grade levels. ; • Elementary school physical plant - a light in the parking lot; improvements to the bathrooms which now have no doors on the stalls of the upper level girls’ rooms and no partitions between the stalls in the boys’ room; amelioration ofithe urine odor in the bathrooms; corrections to the incinerator to prevent smoke from entering classrooms; a ceiling-to-floor divider in a room which now has only a half partition; repairs to classroom sinks where the fixtures have leaked, ruined the floors and swelled the doors, making the space unusable; improved copying machines;
