Fpr that, he enlisted the help of his friend and fellow Prince William County firefighter Jackie Estes, also a member of the Washington VFD. The state requires at least two state-certified Cardiac Technicians who are licensed to provide intravenous drug therapy and medical assistance for cardiac patients and others suffering lifethreatening illnesses and injuries.
Both men undertook the necessary training, and the department undertook to purchase the necessary advanced medical equipment, which includes portable heart monitoring devices able to radio medical information to doctors at a distant hospital emergency room.
Now, Washington provides ALS emergency medical services to nearly all of Rappahannock County, serving as one of only two such units in the county (the other is in Flint Hill). Roger and Jackie are two of the four Cardiac Techs in the county.
On many emergency calls, whether in Slate Mills or Amissville, Washington’s " “medic unit” is often requested by other companies as back-up assistance for stroke, heart attack, and severely injured patients. “The medic unit serves the entire county,” said Rev. Hobson. “And Roger is as capable a firefighter as he is a rescue worker.”
And one of the reasons the unit is so frequently requested is the level of care which the team provides. Again, much of that is due to Chief Roach’s leadership, said
