A free exchange
Last week, Washington’s Planning Commission met. Nothing remarkable, just another monthly meeting of a governmental board.
But something happened which is worthy of mention. The commissioners discussed a number of proposals, several of which could significently affect the lives of the town’s residents, as well as those of the rest of the county. During the exchange, ideas were presented which some people will agree with, and others will firmly reject.
It’s important to note that the Planning Commission serves as an advisory body, which is charged by state law with providing the Town Council with ideas and suggestions to improve the quality of life for the town’s residents. The Town Council is free to accept or reject the commission’s recommendations, and any proposals must be put before the public and comments requested during a public hearing before being adopted.
What we applaud is the commissioners’ unabashed, freewheeling approach to problem-solving. It’s possible that none of the ideas discussed by the commission will be adopted by the Town Council, that some will be rejected by the * commission after further study as unworkable for one reason : or another. ; Regardless of the ultimate fate of the suggestions * < discussed by the commission, it’s the willingness of the members to at least talk about solutions to problems which will probably strike some residents as unusual, impractical or Z impossible. That’s the function of the Planning Commission — ' to look into the future and foresee problems and solve them * before they develop. ■ Sometimes, that requires unusual approaches. Some of ' the world’s most successful ideas and inventions were - dismissed as crazy by the experts of the time. People scoffed £ at the Wright Brothers, and laughed at Henry Ford.
By its willingness to consider all alternatives, the commission is truly fulfilling its function, and in the process providing a real service to the residents of the town. We hope that the council and the town’s residents will continue to support and encourage the planners in their efforts to provide for the future of Washington.
