Mr. Wickens suggested that the matter should be set for a public hearing, perhaps a joint hearing with the Town Council in February.
He told the members of the commission that the council had re quested Frank Reynolds, the town’s attorney, to draft an amendment to the parking provision of the zoning ordinance which would reduce the off-street parking requirement for all commercial uses from one space per 100 square feet of floor space to one per 500 square feet.
Mr. Wickens conceded that the amendment would face opposition from “an active group, small and largely non-resident, which is con cemed about parking.” He acknowledged that, as the town grows, it will need stricter enforcement of parking regulations and possibly more public off-street parking.
“Another group,” he added, “does not want to see the town paved over and aglow with mercuryvapor lights. ”
Parking is only a problem at certain times, such as court days, he said, “but go to the Apple Blossom Mall and you’re fortunate not to have to walk three blocks — here you feel put out if you can’t park right in front of the building. With the present ordinance, he maintained, “the town is in danger of having the grass, trees and gardens paved over.”
