‘La Bamba’
The movie La Bamba will be playing at the Gay Street Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 2 and 3, at 7:30 each evening. Luis Valdez retells Ritchie Valens’ late ’50s fame. Valens’ life became a rock ‘n’ roll fairytale of saintly ambition - and the “saint” here is debuting actor Lou Diamond Phillips. West Coast band Los Lobos ghosts Valens’ voice and music (behind Phillips) with updated flair.
Free ‘heart to heart’ program
“Heart to Heart,” an educational meeting for people with heart disease and members of their families, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fauquier Hospital Educational Center.
Dr. Dave Snyder will speak about how to motivate yourself towards healthy living. The free program is co-sponsored by Fauquier Hospital and the American Red Cross.
Karate classes at CCLC
Children’s karate classes will be held at the Child Care and learning Center each Wednesday, Jan. 13-March 30, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost of the 12-week series will be $65. Karate suits are available. Call the Center at 675 = 3237 for registration or additional information.
Local dancer to perform
New Year’s Eve
Anthea, a local bellydance performer and instructor, will present three Mid-eastern Dance shows as part of “First Night/Virginia’s" non-alcoholic celebration on New Year’s Eve. Beginning at 7, 9 and 11 p.m. at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville, each of her performances will include work with veil, fans and scimitar. This is the second time she has participated in the Charlottesville New Year’s Eve show.
A Culpeper area resident for 13 years, Anthea currently runs a local Bellygram Service, performs with a folkloric troupe based in Fairfax and teaches bellydancing.

EMT class in Flint Hill
The Rappahannock-Rapidan EMS Council is sponsoring an Emergency Medical Technician class at the Flint Hill Fire Hall. The class will be held Monday and Thursday evenings from 7-10 beginning Jan. 4.
