The cocaine found in his house on Dec. 13 had been picked up at Peper’s residence in The Plains, Nicholson testified. “Denis said he made the arrangements for me to give the coke to George because he wasn’t going to be in town that weekend.”
Nicholson added that he and Peper had several telephone conversations about the deal. Prosecutor Rick Alderman introduced subpoenaed telephone records showing three telephone calls Dec. 10 and 11 between the number listed in Nicholson’s name to numbers listed as Peper’s residence and office.
Following his arrest, Nicholson said, he met Peper at a fitness center in Warrenton. According to the Commonwealth’s witness, the dentist was at first reluctant to talk to him. “He thought I was bugged by the cops. But he chased me down as I was leaving, and said he wanted $1,500 ... He kind of threatened me. He said, ‘The Colombians are after me. I need the money. They might even come up here and get your car’.”
Nicholson testified he later called Peper from the courthouse in Washington, Va., and said they needed to talk. “He said, ‘All I know is that I loaned you $1,700 for furniture’, and hungup.”
Under cross examination, Nicholson admitted to selling cocaine in California where he was stationed with the U. S. Navy seven years ago and confirmed that he’d also sold the drug in Front Royal, but had not been prosecuted in either jurisdiction.
