Wakefield School’s math team ranked fourth among private schools in the 1987 Mathematics Contest sponsored by the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, held at Lord Fairfax Community College Nov. 14.
Wakefield’s team of Takashi Takenoshita, Carey Maar and Tobias Dengel, competing on the calculus level, the highest of the contest, finished just behind Woodberry Forest School and the Collegiate School of Richmond. Norfolk Academy ranked first among the 25 private schools which participated in the contest.
Wakefield’s Takenoshita, a senior from Kagoshima City, Japan, ranked 26th out of 721 students statewide who took the exam, and third among private school students.
Charles McGlothlin, head of Wakefield’s mathematics department, presented the three team members with certificates of merit in recognition of their achievement on the test. The school also received a certificate noting the team’s high placement in the competition.
