much of the vision which has led the department to where it is today. “He can explain how the contributions of the community will be used in ways which will return benefits to all. And, when people understand that, they’re more willing to help.”
Not only has the community support enabled the company to purchase new equipment, the fire hall has been completed and much of its* once-heavy debt has been retired, Mr. Leggett said. “Roger has been the key . . . he’s the most important motivator, the spirit. Most nights he’s at the fire house, training drivers, maintaining equipment.”
Rev. Hobson told of stopping by the fire hall recently and finding Chief Roach busy buffing the floor of the meeting hall. “He’s a hard worker — at whatever needs to be done.”
The respect for Chief Roach extends outside Rappahannock. Ken Pullen, a Flint Hill resident who works for the state’s Division of Emergency Medical Services, called him “about the most unselfish person I know in his desire to improve fire and rescue services. He is unsurpassed in his professionalism and dedication. He’s always looking out for the best interests of the county’s residents.”
