conservative opponents will try to spike it for two reasons:moral and financial. She expects the bill will, at the very least, go to the House Appropriations Commmittee, which will consider the funding request.

Area lawmakers, who haven’t reviewed the specifics of the program recommended by the state Board of Education, generally think sex education should be taught in public schools but are worried about the curriculum being too explicit.

Some also expressed reservations about a mandated program that would penalize jurisdictions that refuse to particpate in it.

In other education matters, the General Assembly will wrestle with the school-aid funding formula, always a source of contention between suburban and rural jurisdictions.

Lawmakers will decide whether or not to stay with the existing formula. A state commission has made several recommendations on alternatives to the- existing formula, but the suggestions have produced considerable confusion and dissatisfaction among legislators, educators and citizens.

Presently, it’s unclear which way the General Assembly is headed on the matter.

Other items on the education platter include mandating teachers salaries to keep pace with the national average, whether localities should be given the option to elect school board members and whether the mandate requiring schools to open after Labor Day weekend should be continued. The law expires June 30,1988.
