having trouble getting intravenous needles inserted correctly into the practice mannequin’s arm. So Chief Roach offered the use of his arm for the students to practice on, explaining that it more closely resembled a real patient. “He really puts himself into his work,” she said, laughing again.
For all the praise lavished on him by others, Chief Roach quickly shifts the focus from himself to the volunteers with whom he works. Just after Christmas last year he was in command at the fire scene at the Washington House of Reproductions. Volunteers from a number of companies fought the blaze and saved much of the building.
Chief Roach refused to take any of the credit, giving it instead to the' firefighters who had worked at his direction. “I have a lot of praise for the companies ... It was excellent the way they came together and worked. It would have been an easy fire to quit on.”
As recently as Tuesday night, Chief Roach was in command again, this time at the scene of a reported chimney fire which, thankfully, turned out to be minor. He oversaw the cleaning out of the chimney obstruction, then instructed a younger volunteer on the proper way to brace a ladder: “Stand behind it and you’ll get more leverage. And hold onto the rails, not the steps. That way you don’t have to let go to keep the other man from stepping on your fingers.”
He was there to grab the end of a ladder handed down from the roof. And when a photographer turned his camera toward the chief, he received a good-natured admonishment: “You’re not supposed to take pictures of me — take some of the other guys. They’re the ones doing the work.”
Despite his protestations, there are plenty of people who will be happy to tell anyone who asks that Chief Roach is always around to pick up his share of the load — and then some. For that, reluctant though he may be to accept it, he has the respect and gratitude of the county’s residents, as well as those living elsewhere, who have been helped by his knowledge and selfless dedication.
