Most people are unaware of the extent of incidents of domestic violence. I recently found some alarming statistics supplied by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
In almost 24 percent of families with a history of domestic violence, the. wife was attacked while pregnant.
Police receive approximately the same number of wife-abuse complaints in Norwalk, Conn., a city whose residents span a wide socioeconomic range, as they do in Harlem, New York, a relatively homogenous urban area of comparable size.
According to a 1982 FBI report, 30 percent of female homicide victims are killed by their spouse or partner.
Seventy-five percent of male abusers were abused as children.
In one-half of violent families, the children are battered as well as the wife.
Many of the women I see who seek counseling to deal with abuse say they feel trapped. If they have children they may feel protective of them, making the feelings of entrapment even more severe.
