public hearing last December, the Board of Supervisors approved the $1.5 million expansion project for the county’s high ..ttdrwol afcjta January bo+rd route ting. However, when the bids were opened the School Board still came up more than $150,000 short of the state’s literary loan money.
Plans for the expansion went forward, with school administrators frantically hunting for extra pennies to pinch off to reduce the shortfall. By fall, the funds needed had been reduced to less than $50,000, with Superintendent David Gangel extracting pledges from the board that expected budgetary surpluses would be earmarked for the expansion project.
At year’s end, Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell reported that the library and two classrooms are all but complete and in use, and that the chemistry and biology laboratories are awaiting equipment but are otherwise nearly done.
The new gymnasium has walls up and some of the ceiling joists installed, with the construction crews waiting for the rain to end so that the rest of the roof can be installed, Mr. Chappell said. He “guesstimated” that the new gym would
