market meat counters). For a perch, slip two dowel rods through the bottom of the bag at 90-degree angles. Hang the bags high in the tree to keep the neighborhood cats and squirrels away, and prepare for chickadees, nuthatches and wrens to swarm the tree.
Birds need water close at hand, and as the temperatures drop and usual sources skim over with ice, pie plates placed on stumps or fenceposts provide fresh water for wintering birds. The ice will have to be dumped each morning, but the effort will be well-rewarded by a loyal band of feathered visitors, who will stay as long as the food and water are available.
One caution ornithologists offer is that if you begin feeding birds over the winter and have to go away, try and make arrangements for a neighbor or friend to continue the feeding while you’re away. The birds come to depend on the food, and if it disappears, especially during a cold, snowy spell, they could be without an alternative source of wild food.
So, use that Christmas tree as an addition to the backyard habitat rather than throwing it away. It will be appreciated, and pay dividends, with an increase in wildlife visitors.
