"It was a perfect day for the runners,” said a jubilent Frank Reynolds, after capturing his ninth Eva L. Smith Memorial in the 11th running of the Fodderstack 10K Road Race last Saturday.
“It was perfect for the runners,” race committee member Betsy Murray agreed, “but we lost all the walkers.”
Although the downpour held off until almost everyone had finished Saturday morning, a persistent drizzle and cool temperatures kept all but the hardiest competitors indoors and Saturday’s race had the lowest turnout, 182 starters, in recent years.
However, Ms. Murray said, the race went very smoothly and seemed to be enjoyed by all. Due to the rain the trophy presentation was moved from its usual venue on the courthouse steps across the street to the Gay St. Theatre, “but that wasn’t a problem either. Everybody went in, got warm and were presented their awards.”
Ms. Murray said that, despite the weather, the race committee had plenty of volunteers ready to help Saturday morning, and that the committee’s advance planning and several changes, notably in the finish line arrangement, made the event go off without a hitch.
And though many spectators stayed home because of the rain, those who did brave the damp and dreary morning were, “very enthusiastic,” Ms. Murray said.
Along with Mr. Reynolds, the Smith Memorial award to the fastest Rappahannock woman went to Nina Stamer, with a time of 43:55. She improved her Smith Memorial winning time last year of 44:39 on her way to victory Saturday, her second in a row. At least one previous winner, Lisa
