continue to make himself a national spokesman for the Repulican Party. His message is reminiscent of the days when J. Edgar Hoover appeared before a committee of Congress and helped introduce the Republican idea of twenty years of Democratic treason under Presidents Roosevelt and Truman.
So we have had more than 35 years of Republicans trying to convince people that Democratic ideas and candidates are probably communist. Miraculously, the communist menace has turned to jelly recently, but apparently “left-wing” is still useful. ;
Before communists, we had attempts to scare people with Roman Catholic and Jewish plots to take over our government. I found an old book on that in the attic of my 2(Xj)year-old house on Martha’s Vineyard.
The absurdity of a Republican talking about Democratic governmental corrpution as endemic aftdr an eight year Reagan administration marked by more illegality, indictments and convictions of former government officials than even the Nixon administration is so obvious that one wouldn’t think it worth pacing attention to.
But last fall, we saw how canlpaign lies and distortions turned !a reputable candidate into some sogt of bogeyman. Hence my unwillingness to let Gingrich’s words lie unrebutted. His scoundrel call for la “crusade to save our children aril our future” requires Democrats t£> speak out.
Why can’t we welcome differences between Democrats and Republicans in their approaches to the issues of the day? Why can’t we discuss problems rationally without libelling Democrats criminal, unpatriotic or communist?
