Failure to make big plays and an inability to hold on to the lead has been costly to the Rappahannock baseball team this year.
The Panthers dropped their record to 1-3 over the week with one game suspended in the top of the eighth due to darkness. RCHS trailed that one 15-12 at home; the game will resume Friday, April 21, at Stonewall Jackson prior to the regularly scheduled 7:30 contest.
On the road, the Panthers came out flat against host Brentsville Tigers and fell 6-2. In the April 14 match, Rappahannock's first three batters were retired in the opening inning, two on strikes. The Panthers were scoreless until the fourth when Doug Smith got on with a single. Danny Ellis advanced Smith with a double, and Julian Groves knocked him in with a sacrifice fly.
RCHS scored again in the fifth when Anthony Porter hit another sacrifice, driving in Bill Atkins. The Rappahannock boys were five-for-24 at the plate and struck out nine times.
The game’s turning point came earlier in the second inning when the scoreboard was still blank. John Brown and Jamie Walters collided in center field while pursuing a “catchable” ball; three runs scored. “It was a loss for us at the plate and mentally,” said coach Gary Leake.
