The Trading Post is welcoming the return visit of Iroquois silversmith, Gerald Schenandoah on Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and 23, 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. In addition canned-goods donations for the Rosebud Reservation Youth Center in Parmelee, South Dakota will be accepted.

Wanted: Miss Rappahannock

The Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad will sponsor its annual Miss Rappahannock Beauty Pageant on Saturday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Rappahannock County High School. The event is open to all young women between the ages of two and 21. There will also be a mother/daughter division this year. All contestants must secure a $10 sponsorship fee, and should plan to attend the rehearsal on Thursday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m. at RCHS. Call for entries

Interested artists are invited to submit photographs, paintings, drawings and sculptures of people in Rappahannock County for a juried show entitled: “Faces of Rappahannock,” to be presented at the Middle St. Gallery, June 2-25. This show will be juried by Washington portrait photographer Susan Harrison, one of the Virginia Museum of the Arts Affiliate Artists. The show will be curated by Dr. Denise Horton, and questions may be addressed to her at 675-3771 or to the Gallery, 675-3440. Work is to be submitted on June 1, and there will be a show fee of $5.

Breakfast at AVFD

Amissville Volunteer Fire Department is sponsoring an all-youcan-eat breakfast on Sunday, April 30 from 7-11 a.m. The menu will include pancakes, eggs, sausage, home fries, coffee and orange juice. Price is $4 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under.

Rev. Freeman to speak

Rev. Forrest Freeman of Washington will be speaking at William Chapel on Chester Street in Front Royal on Sunday, April 23 at 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Race tickets at Snaps

Advance ticket sales for the Great Meadows Steeplechase race which will be held Saturday, May 6 will be available at Snaps in Flint Hill. There will be advance ticket sales only. 'Gorillas in the Mist'

The movie Gorillas in the Mist will be playing at the Gay Street Theater on Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. each evenirig. The movie stars Sigourney Weaver and Bryan Brown. Dian Fossey, stunningly played by Weaver, emerges as a dashing, courageous colossus of animal rights whose methods on behalf of her beloved, endangered gorillas may have gotten a wee bit extreme toward the end, but all in the name of a good cause. Fossey spent nearly two decades, on and off, in the mountains of Rwanda before she was murdered by an unknown assassin. We see highlights from her long years of study in Rwanda, when her dedication to preserving what she called “her” gorillas against poachers became a frequently ugly one-woman war. This film is well worth seeing for Weaver’s gutsy, beautifully shaded performance, for its African landscapes and for its glimpse, however incomplete, into a fascinating woman whose virtues and vices are still being hotly debated. The movie is rated PG-13, Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.

RSTA to meet

The Rappahannock Save the Animals (RSTA) will hold their first meeting on Friday, May 5 at the Courthouse at 7 p.m. Any interested persons are urged to attend. “This is your chance to help do something,” said an organizer. For further information call Trish Drake, 675-3443.

Local band debuts at fire hall

A new local band of Rappahannock musicians will appear at the Washington Fire Hall Saturday, April 22. The “Crazy Eights,” composed of Vincent and Dinah Day, Jody Carbone, Julie Coon, Mark Calandrella, Ron Wilson and Steve and Mitch Hostetter, will give a benefit dance for RAAC starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are $7.50, on sale at the door.
