The Antarctica Service
Medal, one of the rarest of U.S. service awards, was received by Army Chief Philip L. Thornton III, whose parents live in Sperryville. Presenting the medal in recent ceremonies at Ft. Eustis, was Lieutenant Colonel James F. Hill, aviation officer at the fort. He is a 1959 graduate of Staunton Military Academy and graduated from Rappahannock County High School in 1965.
Hillsdale Drive-In Theatre near Washington, Va. will open for the season on Friday night, May 2. Films will be shown Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the summer, according to proprietor Mrs. Bertha Armel.

There’ll be a small, new artists’
colony in Rappahannock next month, as Joy Turner Luke teaches a two-week “workshop in color” at her studio, high above the F.T. Valley Road that winds down to Madison. But, Mrs. Luke’s students won’t be standing at their easels sketching or pondering composition.
