To the editor:
The April 9, Sunday “Outlook” section of the Washington Post had an article that I urge everyone to read: “The Gingrich Manifesto - The New GOP Whip Says It’s Time to Clean House,” by Newt Gingrich, a representative elected from Georgia.
This article is a key-note declaration that will be repeated as a theme of the Republican Party throughout this administration. Because it is fallacious and slanderous; it needs to be scotched.
The metaphor Rep. Gingrich employs, “time to clean house” means it is time to get Democrats out of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and Republicans in. Not surprisingly, he’s not satisfied with just Republican Executive power.
It isn’t Rep. Gingrich’s wrish to elect Republicans that I take exception to. It is the reason that he claims this change is needed that disturbs me: he says Democrats represent unethical and corrupt government, which he associated with “left-wing values,” w'hich he also thinks characterize Democrats. He says Democrats cheat, «pid that some personnel in Chicago have been convicted of racketerring, bribery and fraud, and in New York of extortion, bribery, theft and fraud.
In one paragraph, he says, “Perhaps the finest introduction to the systematic corruption inherent in a bureaucratized liberal welfare state is Mario Vargas Llosa’s introduction to Hernand De Soto’s. . . work on Latin American history,” etc. How’s that for what’s wrong with the Democrats in Congress?
Rep. Gingrich even has the temerity to sandwich former Republican Senator John Tower among a list of what he terms “politically corrupt” Democrats, which for Sen. Tower, must be the unkindest cut of all.
