Rappahannock is 3-3 on the season. “If we can start playing the whole game the way we’ve been playing the bottom four innings, we should win a lot more. We are always real nervous in the beginning,-” said Mrs. Leake. RCHS was disciplined at the plate and only struck out two times, down from their average of seven at the start of the season.
“We are playing well as a teaih and I’m not just talking about this nine that are on the field. As a coach I don’t always look for players with great physical abilities; instead 1 look for attitudes. I’ve got 15 great attitudes! The bench is always enthusiastic. They are always in the game yelling and making up cheerfc, and that helps a lot,” Mrs. Leake noted.
One of the keys to the blue and gold’s success has been Amy Nokes. The junior hurler had a perfect game on the mound, giving up only one earned run, striking out two, arid walking none. Stonewall had been averaging ten runs a game but according to their coach, Tim Miiinich, “The girl mesmerized us.”
Unlike most district pitched, j Nokes does not throw windmill style. Instead she has sacrificed speed for accuracy and starts her delivery from behind her back. “I used to pitch windmill, but I didn’t have enough control. A lot of times teams have trouble hitting off me becausb they’re not used to the way I throw,. And if they do get a hit, our defense is so good that they will get the out,-’ Nokes explained.
Rappahannock’s home game verisus Manassas Park Tuesday, April 18 was rained out. The next game ip Thursday, April 20 at the elementary school, and on Friday they travel to Mt. Jackson to face Stonewall’s Generals again. J
