On alternate Thursday mornings the class will go on three three-hour field trips to sites in Rappahannock County or nearby.
This course is designed to help with the field identification of Rappahannock County birds. Other subjects to be covered are field techniques, bird feeders and nest boxes, as well as bird books and binoculars. Interesting springtime bifd behavior such as pair-bonding, territory, vocalizations and migration will be discussed.
Betsy Trent Thomas, an ornithologist, will teach the course. She is.a Research Associate of the Smithsonian Institution and a holder of .a Master Banders Permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Ms. Thomas, a new and enthusiastic county resident, is a field researcher. Her principal work has been in avian behavior of South American birds, on which she has published more than 20 scientific papers.
The study course will be limited to 15 participants and there will be a $20 charge for the course. Call Ms. Thomas evenings (937-5063) to register or for more information about the course.
