bassador to Ireland and former owner of world-class race horses - Del. Guest is a folksy, down-to-earth individual who has a farm near Front Royal in Warren County.
Everyone, even political enemies, considers him a gentleman, but he doesn’t qualify as a “gentleman farmer.” That’s because he actually gets out and plows the land himself.
One memorable comment during a so-far unmemorable series of GOP guvematorial campaign debates, was when Del. Guest said, during a discussion of sex education in public schools, that as one who had been raised on a farm he’d had plenty of sex education at an early age.
While some might bejnclined to write him off as a future factor in statewide politics, Larry Sabato, the distinguished political science professor at the University of, Virginia, is not one of them.
Prof. Sabato thinks Mr. Guest four years hence might be a good possibility for lieutenant-governor on a ticket headed by Eddy Dalton for Governor. That presumes - as most observers do - that Mrs. Dalton, widow of former Governor John Dalton — will be elected lieutenantgovernor this year.
The last statewide hurrah for two of three remaining Republicans running for governor is almost certainly coming with the June 13 primary. That would leave Del. Guest, who has no trouble winning re-election to the House, well-positioned to go after second spot on the ticket in 1993.
And if he won he would be the odds-on choice for the GOP nomination for Governor before he turned 58.
