vestment Challenge provides a reallife lesson in the workings of the stock market which no classroom explanations can touch. Tim DeMello, the founder of Wall Street Games who originally designed the game for the retail market, explained to FBLA’s magazine, “The challenge is an excellent opportunity for students to apply some of the business principles learned in the classroom.”
The only thing that is not real is the money won — and lost. This is fortunate for some of the 12,000 college students who challenged Wall Street last year. University of Michigan senior Michael Rapoport seemed well on his way to a top finish, earning nearly $1 million in the first month, until he lost $400,000 on a stock sale later in the game. His loss had a special, and all-too-real, irony. He wanted the stock to go down in value; instead, it shot up to a new high after he sold his shares.
