It was a black and speckled starling, one of the so-called gangsters of the bird world. The only way the bird could have come into the house was by way of the chimney. Earlier that day we had noticed disturbed drapes, and a loosened inside window screen, and though we blamed the cat, we never suspected we had a bird in the house. The soothing sound of the harp apparently brought it out from its hiding place.
After the air has circulated around the channels of the masonry, it flows out through a heat register on the second floor at about 105 degrees to warm the bedrooms. The nicely warmed brickwork becomes a low-level radiator for the rest of the house. Apart from the chore of carrying logs from the outdoor woodpile, the system is trouble-free, and in the evenings we have a cheery flicker of flames to look at, and hot coals for making toast, popping popcorn, and roasting chestnuts.
I don’t want to argue for or against the traditional potbellied stove, but a hollow masonry fireplace is probably more efficient. More air gets to the flames so the burning process is more complete. Less creosote collects in the flue or
