Around dusk, visitors are invited to join the residents and carollers at an old-fashioned holiday bonfire for friendship and more carolling.
On both evenings, local residents will don authentic period costumes to dance to colonial music.
Close by the town, the Child Care and Learning Center on U.S. 211 west of Washington will have its annual Childrens’ Christmas Bazaar. This unusual event features shopping just for the little ones, with prices to match their budgets. There is also entertainment for the older kids, and Santa will be there to greet all the visitors, young and old.
In town, holiday greens will be available for purchase, and there are several Christmas-tree farms within easy driving distance, for those struck by a sudden urge to start the holiday decorating early this year.
The event is sponsored by the Washington Business Council, a group of town merchants whose goal is to preserve and promote the historic town of Washington, Virginia, as a national treasure.
“There will be something going on nearly everywhere in town,” said a business council spokesman. “This is a celebration of the towm’s traditions; a melding of the old and the new in a beautiful rural setting.”
Visitors, townspeople and of course the residents of Rappahannock and surrounding counties are invited to join in kicking off the holiday season with a colonial celebration on Dec. 2 and 3, the spokesman added.
