On Thanksgiving Day, Americans across the country will reflect on our nation’s forefathers — whose struggle and survival they celebrated with the first Thanksgiving.
Rappahannock residents continue that first Thanksgiving’s tradition with a community Thanksgiving church service, honoring our heritage and offering thanks for our blessings.
Washington Baptist Church, located at the comer of Mt. Salem Ave. and Gay St., will host the 10 a.m. service.
“This is something which has been going on for years,” explained Trinity Episcopal Church’s Rev. Jennings Hobson III. The interdenominational service has grown over the years as well, and now includes seven participating clergy and their congregations.
This year it will include Rappahannock County’s Methodist Charge (Sperryville, Flint Hill and Willis Chapel Methodist Churches), Washington, Sperryville, Promise Land and First Baptist Churches, St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Mission and Trinity Episcopal Church. The location of the service is rotated annually to give each church an opportunity to host the event.
The Rev. Wendell Grant of Washington’s First Baptist Church will deliver the sermon at the Thanksgiving service. Five other participating pastors; the Rev. Hobson, the Rev. Merlin Shorb, the Rev. John Pendleton, the Rev. Earl Gerald and Father Albert Verbeke, will read Scripture, lead prayers, or perform other duties during the service.
An offering will be taken and the proceeds donated to the Rappahannock County Department of Social Services. The department is currently organizing a drive to provide Christmas baskets to the area’s neediest families.
