Dr. Gangel demonstrated “HyperBook,” a computerized textbook in college biology that had been donated to the school system by Potomac Edison. Only a small portion of the textbook has been wTitten, but with that portion it is possible to read text, hear scientific terms pronounced and view animated illustrations of molecules passing through cell membranes.
Dr. Gangel said the program and computer to use it had been donated, not so much to teach cellular biology, but to allow Rappahannock’s teachers to use it and the HyperCard program to develop their own computerized animated lessons.
In other action the School Board:
• approved the student parking lot fees worked out as a compromise between student representatives and the school administration. The fee will be $12 this year and will increase $2 per year, to $20 in 1993-94.
• appointed Ron Vickers 8thgrade boys' basketball coach; and S< :t Mellott, head track coach. x • approved a schedule for developing next year’s budget. The Dec. 12 School Board meeting will provide a time for employees and the public to make suggestions. The budget will be presented to the School Board at a work session March 0, and public response will be accepted at the March 13 regular meeting.
• learned that the elementary school breakfast program has been growing and is now self-supporting. It will be continued.
• learned that a school bus will make a loop through the Rappahannock Lakes subdivision on a trial basis. This was in response to a request from the homeowners association. Dr. Gangel explained that the purpose of the trial is not to provide door-to-door pick up in the subdivision, but to see if the route Wouldn’t be safer than turning the bus around on the public road.
