where the air is not too dry. If placed in a window, the plant should be removed at night if there is danger of chilling. Soil mixture should be maintained at moderate and uniform levels, neither too wet nor too dry. The average length of poinsettia life in the home is two to three weeks.
A poinsettia responds to daylength. and is known as a short-day (or long-night) plant. Be sure it gets no light from sundown to sunup. Even very short periods of light at night may be enough to prevent or interfere with flowering. If the plant is to be grown in a room that is lighted nightly, cover it at dusk with a heavy paper bag, a piece of opaque black cloth or other light-tight cover, or put it in a dark closet. Remove the covering from the plant, or the plant from the closet, at about 8 each morning.
The poinsettia requires 14 hours of complete darkness from Oct. 10 until color shows, usually around Thanksgiving.
AZALEAS — All azalea varieties sold by florists are handled alike in the home. The plant should be kept in a cool spot while in flower, especially at night. A warm, dry atmosphere will make the azalea bloom quickly and the blossoms will last only a short time. Remove the flowers as soon as they have faded and keep the plant in a cool, sunny location.
