Many plants look lovely as
centerpieces or festive
accents during the Christmas season. Their beauty fades quickly, however, unless they receive special care.
The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima). a native of Mexico, is the traditional and most popular Christmas plant. Red-flowered varieties are most popular, but white, pink and semi-double varieties are available. The white variety is attractive by itself or in combination with red plants.
The showy, colored structures often called flowers are actually bracts. The flower is the yellow structure found in the center of each whorl of bracts.
Poinsettias are sensitive plants that require proper care. Drafts, too cool or too warm temperatures, sudden temperature changes, dry atmosphere, improper watering and dim light can cause loss of leaves and withering of bracts.
To care for poinsettias in the home, you should strive for a uniform day termperature from 70 to 75 degrees F, and always reduce the thermostat setting to about 60 degrees F at night. Place the plant in bright light (but not direct sun) and
