Install fresh batteries — better to be safe than sorry. Don't forget to do the same with the flash.
• Clean the lens before you start shooting.
• Have plenty of film on hand. Buy a throw-away camera, too. just in case.
• Fill the frame of the picture. Blumenthal suggests thinking of the photo as a story. Fill the image area of the camera with your maun character or characters.
• Try the shot again and again. Don't be afraid to take a lot of pictures to get the one you ultimately want.
• When taking people shots, make their eyes the centred focus of the photo.
More and more people are buying video cameras to record any number of events, including holiday happenings. Video cameras are available in VHS, Beta and 8millimeter formats and can be as small as a purse or as large as the units professionals tote around.
The best bet is to visit a store and carry' various cameras around, discussing which has the options you want in a size you can handle. Jim Meigs, editorial director of Video Review, recommends that first-time buyers opt for easy-to-operate machines and purchase a name brand that has a good reputation for follow-up service.
