Anthea performs
at Nat'l Theatre
Local bellydancer Anthea performed with the Topkapi Dancers at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., as part of the “Monday Night at the National” series. The ensemble presented two shows outlining the history of Oriental Dance from Pharonic times to the present.
Oriental Dance, called bellydance in America, is the Mid-eastern version of a dance form that spread from India through the Mid-east to Spain. Pictures of bellydancers painted 15,000 years ago have been found on cave walls in Europe.
Anthea is known locally for her bellygrams, which surprise many a birthday boy and retiree in this area, and she also performs under the name “Kawakib” at the Casablanca Restaurant in Alexandria.
Besides teaching Oriental Dance privately in her home in Boston, Anthea conducts a Beginner Course for the Community Education Department in Charlottesville.
In March she will be returning to the National Theatre with the Topkapi Dancers, for a Saturday-morning children’s program on Mideastern folkdance.
