At home, shake them out in the backyard to get out as much of the dirt and leaves as you can, and then soak them for an hour or two in a sink full of warm water and a cup of household bleach. Let them dry thoroughly on paper towels. This will take a couple of days at least because the pinecones will close up temporarily.

When the clean cones open, you're ready to create any number of easy decorative wonders.
