The holiday spirit

This week, families across the county will join together for the celebration of Thanksgiving. It is a time traditionally given to families, and to counting our blessings.

It is also a time to remember those less fortunate, those who may not have the necessities, much less the luxuries of life. For some, there is no Thanksgiving turkey, no steaming vegetables, no family gathered around the dinner table.

For others, there is no place to call home, much less a table laden with the bounties of the season.

As we remember our blessings, let us also contribute to the others around us who are unable to share our good fortune.

Rappahannock County residents have several opportunities within the next days and weeks to help their neighbors in need.

First, the Extension Homemakers are sponsoring a Bloodmobile at the Washington Volunteer Fire Department on Monday, Nov. 27 from 4 to 8 p.m.

As was done in the spring, the Bloodmobile has included evening hours in an attempt to boost participation by those who work outside the county. We hope that many residents will take a few minutes on their way home from work, or come from home, to give the precious gift of life that blood donors provide. /

The Department of Social Services is sponsoring its annual holiday food basket drive for county residents. Canned goods and donations of money are now being collected at the Social Services office on Gay St. in Washington. The department requests that all donations be made by Dec. 18 so that a final count on the number of baskets available can be made.

Those residents who contribute to the Bloodmobile, and to the Social Services effort, will certainly find their own lives enriched by giving of themselves. They can also find satisfaction in knowing that they have truly contributed to the spirit of the holiday season.
