Washington’s Town Council will hear at its December meeting what form the solution to its ongoing problem with straddle lots will take.
Town Attorney Frank Reynolds told the council at its Nov. 8 meeting that he and County Attorney Peter Luke will meet and decide the exact language which will be proposed for each jurisdiction’s ordinance amendment. The proposals would then be. advertised for public hearing and must then be approved by the Town Council and the county Board of Supervisors.
Town resident Claybert Smoot, whose difficulties with a lot split by the town/county boundary precipitated the efforts to resolve problems with straddle lots, told the council that he has discovered that the town map may have boundaries incorrectly drawn.
The map, which was originally drawn as an index to the county’s property tax records, has recently been used as a reference in the discussion about the straddle lots and may have the northern boundary drawn in the wrong place. Mr. Smoot said he walked the area from Blue Ridge Ave. to Main St. with a surveyor, and when the old metes and bounds are followed the boundary lines up with the old boundary marker on Main St., which is some 50 feet further north along the road than the tax map shows the boundary.
