The county’s courtroom was filled to overflowing Monday ■ evening as Washington’s Planning Commission opened a public hearing on a requestfor rezoning made by The Inn at Little Washington.
Though the three applications, one for a rezoning from the present Village Residential to the Village Mixed Use zone for the property owned by The Inn from its existing building to the intersection of Main and Calvert Streets, a zoning ordinance amendment to relax the building height restriction to a 45foot maximum by special use permit, and another amendment to allow offsite parking on property under common ownership by special use permit; do not directly involve The Inn’s building plans, that was the main focus of the 35 residents who spoke.
Speaker after speaker rose to criticize the plan, calling it “massive,” “grandiose,” “just too big for our little town,” and questioning whether the town’s water, soils, streets and quality of life would be adversely affected by such a large expansion of the business which has become the town’s principal source of income.
Jeannie McNear was among the speakers who questioned that dependence, calling it “not healthy fiscally” to make the town “irreversibly dependent and subservient to the needs of those property owners.”
