Helen LaCava, speaking for the Rappahannock Education Association, said that the teachers at the elementary school need mere time for planning during the school day.
At the high school, in the area of instruction Mrs. LaCava asked only for time for the faculty to evaluate the new programs that were brought in this year with the sevenperiod day.
In the area of salaries the teachers asked that more attention be paid to teacher salaries at the top of the scale. Specifically, Mrs. LaCava suggested that there be salary increments after 18 and 21 years, with longevity supplements for those who teach 25 or 30 years.
The education association also requested a five percent increase to the base salary and requested that the school system pick up the teachers’ share of the retirement system. She said the association also advocates 100 percent funding by the school system for a single subscriber’s cost for health insurance.
Following the presentation, the School Board returned to less pleasant business. Superintendent Gangel said the board’s fuel supplier, Quarles Petroleum, has agreed “to accept responsibility, liability and ownership” of the two underground gasoline storage tanks. “But their reaction at the end of the contract may be to dig them up and take them with them,” Dr. Gangel said.
