v The Rappahannock Historical Society will hold its regular quarterly meeting on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 3 p.m. at the courthouse. Sandra Speiden is the guest speaker.
Mrs. Speiden is an avocational archeologist with a long-standing interest in and concern about archeology and historic preservation. Site surveying over a ten-year period (with a three-year interruption in. the middle of this period to work on the uranium mining issue) of about 10,000 acres in Orange, Madison and Greene counties has resulted in an increase of more than 150 prehistoric sites in these counties being recorded with the state.
She and her husband, Bill, operate Hampstead Farm Inc., a dairy farm in western Orange County. The farm has been designated Hampstead Farm Archeological District, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Virginia Historic Landmark.
For the past two years, Mrs. Spieden has been active in efforts to preserve 11,000-year-old Paleoindiansites in Virginia.
Mrs. Speiden says the most rewarding and important part of her archeological work has been sharing her ever-increasing knowledge of the long-standing history of the area with others.
