R. Carlos Nakai, the Navaho traditional flute player, was in Washington, Va. last week to communicate in words and music what it means to be alive and to be a human being.
The next day he allowed me to interview him and ask questions about what I bad heard at the concert in The Theatre at Washington, Va. during a show with Peter Kater.
I asked him questions about the flutes. He said, “I’m raised in the tradition of my people, which is an oral tradition, the stories and songs being of the culture as a whole. The instrument is a way to express oneself.” '
I heard him use the expression “Native Americans” and at first thought he meant what used to be called American Indians, but as the concert progressed, it became confusing to me who he meant when he used the term.
He explained that the difference between Native Americans and his people who call themselves The People is that The People have never been American citizens.
