Mr. Wirt said the Labor Department will be studying a large number of jobs to see which skills are most important in various jobs, and will be working on ways to measure achievement of the skills. A final report will be coming out this spring, he said.
He said the “mass production” model in use in most schools tries to teach basic skills first. “We need to introduce opportunities for complex thinking earlier,” he said. “Students should tackle real problems all the way along in school.”
Board member John Tole asked how students could be motivated to learn the skills.
