Finally, the board took note of the need to expand operations. At present, Libby Whetzel, vice president and coordinator of tutors, said that there are 19 tutors and 21 students on board. Of the students, four are basic nonreaders, 15 are preGED (i.e., need further individual work before they can make the final assault on a high school equivalency certificate), and two are GED (high school equivalency certificate) candidates.

Those who live near the Culpeper or Fauquier border can make use of the literacy programs in those counties. Formal GED classes in Culpeper and Fauquier are now full, but the „ Piedmont Technical Center on U.S. 15 south of Culpeper serves Rappahannock students and GED classes there meet Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Call Pat Brummett at 703-825-0157 for more information.
