filled with families now have only one or two people living in them,” he said, using his own street, Mount Salem Avenue, as an example. At the turn of the century, he pointed out, Washington’s population was about 500 and it could support its own high school.
“There has to be some growth. The biggest crime in the county is that kids have to move away because they can’t afford to live here,” said Mr. Fisher. He advocates the town and county governments taking a greater role in creating low- and moderate-income housing.
“The life of a community depends on young people staying and carrying on,” he said.
“By an absolutely no-growth position what we’ll have is a very large retirement village,” he said. “What (the town) will become is a kind of museum with a lot of antique shops and B&Bs.”
With Mr. Fisher’s efforts behind it, the town will be looking for solutions to the problem, and whatever else arises.
