He added, “The usual short answer or multiple choice testing will not adequately portray how well students are able to do these things.”

He said it would require “a performance-based assessment with students given an authentic task.”

He added that studies show jobs that require more skills pay better. “Skills pay; that’s an important message to get to students," he said.

The School Board also heard from biology teacher Patty Waddell and biology students John Dwyer and Sherron Boddie about using laser disk technology with computers.

Mrs. Waddell said the program has an image database that enables her to customize slide shows for use in lectures and laboratories. The students reported the program had helped them with their lab work and that they had also used the technology to do slide shows on artists’ work.
