Literacy
According to the American Council on Education, 431,000 Americans passed the general equivalency diploma (GED) exam last year, making one out of every seven high school diplomas a GED diploma. People are realizing it’s never too late to learn: country singer Waylon Jennings earned his GED last year, at age 51 setting an example for many of his fans.
Adult basic education and GED classes are held at the Rappahannock Public Library, starting at 7 p.m. every Monday. Literacy volunteers help the teacher so that the instruction can be tailored to meet the needs of individual students.
Last Friday, Nov. 8, the Board of Directors of the local literacy organization, LVA-Rappahannock, met for the first time in their new quarters in their new quarters in the library.
Most of the furniture has been assembled. There were chairs for all to sit in, tables to work at, and adequate, though incomplete lighting arrangements.
Remaining work includes painting walls and ceilings, and installing carpet on the floor. In the absence of any floor covering, $ome board members were heard to say they were getting cold feet. Nevertheless, the board, acting with deft assurance, selected paint of just the right color for the walls, plus a reflective paint for the ceiling, all of which will be applied this week.
The board also summarized the results of its Sept. 28 annual meeting. The initial membership of 32 last year has grown to 66 this year, representing a substantial increase in the support which the community is ready to give to LVA-Rappahannock.
