Gov. Gilroy had recently returned from the 74th annual Lions Clubs International Convention in Australia and brought the club members up-to-date on the service priorities currently being emphasized by the 1.6 million members in our 40,000 Lions Clubs world-wide.
The Lions were particularly impressed with the new focus on the rapidly growing problem of eye disease and blindness and in hearing what can be done to overcome this global health challenge. It is estimated that over 40 million people suffer from total or disabling blindess most of which is either preventable or curable.
The late great lady, Helen Keller, first challenged the Lions to become “Knights to the Blind.” The newest international Lions program is called “Sight First” dedicated to advanced research as well as practical outreach programs to help eradicate the causes and to provide cures for the growing problem of blindess in our world.
