A recent study conducted at Ohio State University concluded that dishwashers use about a third less water (a total of 9.0 gallons per full load) than would be used to clean an equivalent load of dishes by hand (15.7 gallons). Of course, a dishwasher uses the same amount of water for one dish as it does for the 8-place settings used in the study. So you should only wash full loads to get the water savings.
The study also discovered that people typically rinse off (prewash) dishes before putting them Into the washer. This is not necessary for most machines manufactured within the last ten years. Only baked on foods may require a special, rinse or soaking.
When comparing models before buying a dishwasher, pay attention to each one's energy efficiency ratings. On many dishwashers, you can cut energy by skipping the “dry* cycle. So. assuming you don't pre-wash, machine-washing may not only be convenient. It will place you among the environmentally righteous.
